In this case, a yaw damper doesn't help because when you're on the ground you're going to yaw (think about how you turn an airplane on the ground). When you have a cross wind, you're going to touch down uncoordinated to keep the nose straight and you definitely will be uncoordinated making turns on the ground.

I only know from what I've flown, but disengaging (or ensuring its disconnect) the yaw damper is generally part of the before landing checklist. Mark stated the reason(s) why

Yes Autolands are still permitted, as CAT III a/b... Pretty much any heavy metal has the capability to do so... The B717, 757,767,777 747, A 320s and the list goes on, oh and the SF-340... Nah just kidding, threw that last one in there to throw ya off :-D
